He Called My Name But Took Her Hand

Story Behind The Song

Having known of someone like this who was very violent too, the story just flowed into my head, every scene like a mini-film and one for rough justice for his betrayed lover.

Song Description

Again, her lover leaves her, calls her name but takes the hand of another young woman and goes off into the night. She is again jealous and heartbroken and wishes him ill. Somehow during the night after her betraying lover has made love to the new young woman who later falls asleep, he eats some berries she picked and put in her bag on the way to her home. They are deadly nightshade, and he dies. The police question the new young woman who says she just picked some berries, didn't know what they were, didn't know he would or had eaten them, just found him dead when she woke up. They questioned his long-term betrayed lover, she did not know anything either, and had not seen him or the young woman after they went off into the night. His friends came with a coffin, laid him in and took him away with them. His original long-term lover is now married and at peace, and never, ever eats shiny berries.

Lyrics

He called her name, but took her hand,
back to his own, sweet promised land.
He smiled "You know that this is me,
girls come and go, but I stay free.
And you're my constant when they go,
that's enough for you to know."

Refrain
"She's nothing, not anything, to me." He said
"Just someone, a new one, I'll take to bed."

I followed them and could not flee
the awful wrong he did to me.
While fireworks banged inside my head
I wished him ill, was filled with dread,.
and Belladonna played a part
to stop betrayal in his heart

"He's nothing, not anything, to me." I said
"Just someone, I knew and took to bed."

The girl had berries in her bag,
she couldn't tell the sort she had,
she picked them on her way last night
as they looked sweet and fully ripe.
She fell asleep and didn't know
he'd eaten some and just let go.

"He's nothing, not anything to me" she said,
"just someone I took into my bed"

Misadventure was decreed,
no other thought or other lead.
His friends bought box and laid him in
and there he sleeps with all his sins.
I count my blessings every night,
and don't eat berries shiny bright.

"He's nothing, not anything, to me." I said
"Just someone, I knew who shared my bed."

"He's nothing, not anything to me" I said,
"just someone I took into my be--------d."
