Mavi Mavi

Story Behind The Song

We (Brothers of the Baladi) sing in seven languages, perform on both traditional Middle Eastern instruments AND regular western instruments and we are in love with Middle Eastern (Arabic, Turkish, Persian, Armenian and North African) music. Mavi Mavi is one of the many Middle Eastern songs we perform live. As usual we sing part of the song in English and part in Turkish. This allows us to bring our beloved Middle Eastern music to the western world. We've been doing this since 1976. Mavi Mavi is an old well known Turkish love song made famous by Ibrahim Tatlises one of Turkey's most well known singers. We feature the saz (national stringed folk instrument of Turkey), zurna (double reeded folk horn), doumbek (Middle Eastern drum), def (Middle Eastern frame drum), kachiklar (Turkish spoons) and vocals in both Turkish and English. We then fuse that with keyboards, guitars, bass and drums to create a modern pop groove. We translated the lyrics from Turkish into English and then made the English as poetic as possible so we could grab the ears of English speakers. Mavi Mavi means blue blue and it refers to one's blue eyes. Normally it is a man singing about a woman's beautiful blue eyes. The Turkish lyrics do not translate literally but our English lyrics are an excellent translation: As I wander down this road - Slowly from dawn to dark Longing for so many years - Such a burning in my heart Losing hope but then I see - She is there in front of me As I wander down this road - Slowly from dawn to dark Longing for so many years - Such a burning in my heart Losing hope but then I see - She is there in front of me The chorus is: ?Blue so blue so very blue Eye like precious beads of blue From the moment we first met Blues eyes I won't forget

Lyrics

As I wander down this road - Slowly from dawn to dark
Longing for so many years - Such a burning in my heart
Losing hope but then I see - She is there in front of me

Mavi mavi masmavi
Gözleri boncuk mavi
Bir gördüm asik oldum
Su gelen kimin yari
Blue so blue so very blue
Eye like precious beads of blue
From the moment we first met
Blues eyes I won't forget

Yillardir bir özlemdi
Yanip durdu bagrimda
Tam ümidi kesmisken
Onu gördüm karsimda

Mavi mavi masmavi
Gözleri boncuk mavi
Bir gördüm asik oldum
Su gelen kimin yari
As I wander down this road - Slowly from dawn to dark
Longing for so many years - Such a burning in my heart
Losing hope but then I see - She is there in front of me
