Story Behind The Song
This is a Turkish love song sung in Turkish. It was originally recorded in 1971 by the great American - Armenian oud master John Berberian and sung in Turkish by Bob Tashjian. That is also the only version of this song ever recorded. Mr. Tashjian is deceased but we spoke with Mr. Berbarian and he does not know anything about the song. Their recorded version was sung in Turkish and performed on oud (Middle Eastern lute), clarinet, kanoon (Middle Eastern string instrument) and doumbek (Middle Eastern drum).
It is hard to translate the song because the Turkish words do not translate literally into English. We sing the song in both Turkish and English. It is basically a torch love song / a song of longing and pain. Our English lyrics give an excellent rendering of the song.
Sevgilim means my sweetheart / my love / my darling.
" My heart is burning through the night
Ah sevgilim my love my light "
Since we sing in seven languages, Turkish was rather easy for us. We feature our traditional instruments oud, kanoon, doumbek and riq (Middle Eastern classical tambourine) and we fuel it with guitar, bass, modern drums and various percussion to give it a modern sound.
Whether you speak Turkish or not if you listen you can feel the passion though.

ENGLISH TRANSLATION
Sevgilim means my sweetheart / my love
I tried so hard to be your love
I dreamed of being by your side
So many words are on my lips
But when I speak my tongue is tied
When will you take the time to hear
The words I whisper in your ear
The words of love are hard to say
And like the stars they fade away
The nightingale will die tonight
The yellow rose will take his life
My heart is burning through the night
Ah sevgilim my love my light
