They Taste Like Chicken

Story Behind The Song

Two friends and I were sitting at a the Mellow Mushroom pizza place in Nashville sharing a pie and discussing the menu. Someone was curious about an item on the menu and a comment was made "....probably tastes like chicken." Later the conversation came around to life in outer space. Someone mentioned that aliens in TV never eat, drink, or go to the bathroom. So, we collaborated and tried to write this song. I started over several times before finally settling on this version.

Song Description

In verse 1 a redneck is hunting from a tree stand in a trailer park when he sees a UFO land nearby. He goes to investigate. He can't remember much except...they taste like chicken. In verse 2 he invites the aliens over to his single wide mobile home. They have a good time, but as they are leaving he inadvertently runs over them with his truck. In the bridge - our hunter/singer worries about the legality of harvesting aliens, so he figures out a way to clean up the evidence. Yeah, it's a little ghoulish goulash to his rescue.

They Taste Like Chicken

Hunting from my tree stand Saturday night
At the El Rancho trailer park
with my best dog Scruffy and a six pack of Buds
It was half past dark
When I saw them blue and green and yellow lights
Flitting down from the sky
I knew right away it was a UFO
Gonna land nearby

Well we had to go investigate
Even though I'd drunk too much beer
Most of the nights kinda fuzzy
One thing remains clear

They Taste Like Chicken
Pull the scales off, grab the barbecue sauce
Do some finger licking
You know, they don't lay still
Deep fried or on the grill
But, boil them twice, grill them just right
and they taste like chicken

No, I didn't shoot them little fellers
Least not right away
I gave them a ride to my single wide
In case they needed a place to stay
I gave the tour of my deluxe crib
They loved my velvet Elvis hanging on the wall
We played cards, threw some darts
Had ourselves a ball

But tragedy struck around sun up
As I bid adieu my alien flyers
They looked so cute in their blue jump suits
Squashed under my monster truck tires

They Taste Like Chicken
Pull the scales off, grab the barbecue sauce
Do some finger licking
You know, they don't lay still
Deep fried or on the grill
But, boil them twice, serve them with fries
and they taste like chicken

What do you think would've happened
If I had called the cops
Illegally hunting aliens, I'm pretty sure that's against the law

I'll be hunting from my tree stand Saturday night
Eating barbecue kinda late
There's no conflict, cause they can't convict
As long as I clean my plate

They Taste Like Chicken
Pull the scales off, grab the barbecue sauce
Do some finger licking
You're looking kinda thin
Grab a plate and dive right in
We'll boil them twice, grill them just right
and they taste like chicken
