Lyrics

She dressed with care, checked her hair in the mirror
Big brown eyes, a smile drawn wide between her high cheekbones
But only she could see beneath the veneer
Where words had hurt her worse than sticks and stones

Stepped through the looking glass to where the overpass waited for her
Where concrete and speed waited underneath the White Bear Avenue Bridge
Sang a prayer of blues and stared at the shoes that wore her
Then she freed her feet and leaped off the ledge

He thought at first it must be a bird in a losing flight
The motorcycle driver was just out riding, caught unaware
He hit the brakes, did a double-take and swerved to the right
When the feather-blur turned into long dark hair

Well lovers come and lovers go
With time and grace we tend to grow
But you will never know these things 'cause you tried to fly with broken wings
Now you got no songs to sing
Wounded bird

Time and sound swirled 'round in slow motion
She raised her head and their eyes met in a maze of might-of-beens
There was just a smudge, a thumbprint of blood on her forehead
Like a holy oil absolving all of her sins

He held her gaze, tried to wrap his brain 'round his vision
'Til she turned her face away and lay her head on bended arm
Then he knew she awaited sweet benediction
And the mercy of another moving car

In another world he saves the girl, a gallant knight on his motorbike
When her wings begin to mend she sings songs of hope
Like "I know a change gonna come, Yes it will"

Well lovers come and lovers go
With time and grace we tend to grow
But you will never know these things 'cause you tried to fly with broken wings
Now you haunt some stranger's dreams
Wounded bird

But you will never learn these things 'cause you tried to fly with broken wings
Now you got no songs to sing
Wounded bird
