My Love is in the Smokies

Story Behind The Song

In a songwriting session with Mike Kuhl, he brought up how he used to go to college in Knoxville. Since my daughter attends there and was a freshman at the time, it was her first time away from home. We wrote the song from two different perspectives.

Song Description

This is about the distance from where one lives now and the place from where he came. It's about re-visiting the old places where he used to go with someone very special and wondering if it would be the same if he were to return.

Lyrics

Knoxville's prob'ly hot still,
in the Southern summertime;
For old time's sake
I've got to make
it out there, somewhere down the line;
On Cumberland it's a wonderland,
Of places we used to go,
Where we'd toast and cheer
on the Volunteers
or catch a midnight show.

My love is in the Smokies,
Oh so far away;
Bet if I were on old Rocky Top
it might be a brighter day.
I hope my love is happy there,
as I send up a silent prayer
that the Tennessee skies aren't so gray;
My love is in the Smokies
far away.

If I could take a train
out of the pouring rain
to chase down an old memory;
Would I find the one
shining in the sun
I remember so vividly?
