Story Behind The Song
I lost a girl to a fellow that uses all kinds of distractions, 'smoke and mirrors', to get what he REALLY wants from my girl.... and she can't see it. I needed to be more assertive and recognize that others saw the same attractions that first attracted me to my girl, but I saw beyond the attraction to her character qualities..... but I didn't tell her that. THEY were willing to do whatever it took to take her way from me, to get what THEY wanted. Yeah, I needed to fight more for what I had and lost.
Song Description
Smoke chokes and distracts by obscuring a clear view... and Mirrors blind with flashing light so the views are again blocked as to what is really happening.
I was too conservative, less romantic, thought it would be enough just to be like 'friends' and not push for more commitment from my girl. She, I learned, wanted to be around more 'flash' and at the same time to be doted upon, shown excessive passion, given things, etc. I can and should have shown some of these traits, which I could have provided without the Smoke and Mirrors (the bad parts), when courting her...
So the SONG is about my views of what I see is going on between her and her new boyfriend.... and how she is blinded by the Smoke and Mirrors of this guy.
