Story Behind The Song
This piece was inspired by the idea of small towns and villages becoming increasingly industrial. The title, a contradiction in terms, alludes to this dichotomy between the peacefulness of simpler times and the accumulation of technology which leads to a certain wistfulness and nostalgia for a less complicated way of living.
Song Description
This was originally written during my tenure as an undergraduate in music composition. It represents one of my first attempts with functional melodic chromaticism and extended harmonies. It begins with a simple, pastoral melody and chord progression in dorian mode, which is repeated once. The melody is then harmonized and altered rhythmically in the next section before utilizing dissonanace and a melody in the bass to signify a change in landscape. The next section is a series of chords which crescendos and becomes increasingly dense before resolving in a deceptive progression to a flat six major ninth chord. Finally, the piece ends with a reshaping of the original melody with chromatic mediant motion in the chord progression, the harmony of which is extended until the final chord of the piece.
