Story Behind The Song
My own personal journey through frightful adolescence to a long term relationship, and the experiences of others that I have witnessed.
In each situation there is a feeling of anxiety about what will happen. Looking back, it doesn't matter. Love holds people together with a bond that cannot be broken.
Song Description
This song goes through the course of a relationship between a man and woman, from adolescence to adulthood. It touches on the feeling of insecurity about rejection. In the begining, he can't bring himself to talk about his feelings. When he finally does, he misunderstands acceptance from the bad lighting that has been cast by the cloud of possible rejection.
He thought that all he needed was to get the girl. Once he has the girl, they fight, but she will never leave him. They have been friends and they will remain lovers because they love each other. The circumstances that are described along the way are all just scenery. Their relationship is the only thing that matters.

Lyrics
I was sleeping at a party
you listened for my heartbeat
I was sitting on the stairs
you made sure no one messed with me
Remember smoking out in the park?
Remember swinging in the dark?
How could I?
she said
it just never crossed my mind
How would I?
she said
when you never even tried
we were playing sick from work when
we broke into a friend's apartment
and we found his secret stash
we promised that we'd pay it back
she caught me staring at her reflection
I decided to ask a stupid question
How could I?
she said
it just never crossed my mind
How would I?
she said
when you never even tried
she threw my keys out into the alley
locked the door after she pushed me
I was screaming in the rain
blaming you for everything
don't you shove me
I won't take it
don't you leave me
I won't make it
How could I?
she said
it just never crossed my mind
How could I?
she said
I would never even try
