WHEN'S WILLIE GONNA BUY A NEW GUITAR?

Story Behind The Song

James has had the title sitting around since 1987. We wrote it in September, 2006. Amazing that it's more relevant than ever, isn't it? Hey, Willie--we just know one of your friends is bound to cut this one.

Song Description

Many decades ago, Willie Nelson bought an acoustic guitar. He has apparently played it to the point where a hole has not only appeared on the top of the body, but has grown over the years. It's about time somebody put this musical question to Willie.

(verse)
I hear he's got a big ranch and his own recording studio,
Must of sold about 100 million records and his songs always on the radio,
With the royalties from "Crazy" alone, he must be rollin' in the dough,
Been bangin' on that thing so hard, it's a wonder it ain't fallen apart!

(chorus)
When's Willie gonna buy a new guitar?
That poor beat up Martin sure took him far,
He can afford the finest weed, women and cars,
When's Willie gonna buy a new guitar?

(verse)
One too many holes, scratched up autographed veneer,
She sounds as young as ever, but she's getting on in years,
I don't wanna piss him off 'cause I know he holds her dear,
They're both looking a bit battered and scarred, lately it's tough to tell 'em apart.

(chorus)
When's Willie gonna buy a new guitar?
He's pretty famous, but she helped make him a star.
He can afford the finest weed, women and cars,
When's Willie gonna buy a new guitar?

(bridge)
Each time I see him, he's beatin' the hell out of those strings,
Trigger looks like she's had about all she can stand.
That poor sweet old thing's got so many dings,
I'm afraid she'll crumble into splinters right there in his hands,

(chorus)
When's Willie gonna buy a new guitar?
It would probably cost him less than his tab at the bar.
He can afford the finest weed, women and cars,
When's Willie gonna buy a new guitar? (probably never)
When's Willie gonna buy a new guitar? (not in your lifetime)
When's Willie gonna buy a new guitar?

Wow, this is fantastic! I knew what the song was about even before the first chorus. This song is funny, clever, original and just plain entertaining! An excellent piece of writing! 10 stars! Love the alliteration in the chorus. Weed, women and cars.
