All Hallow's Eve

Song Description

A spooky Danny Elfmann styled Halloween treat. Dark textures and dark themes played by Chamber orchestra and light choir. The piece begins with an ominous whispered, "Evil!" by a choir. Then we hear spooky sounding gates creaking open with dark piano, tubular bells and string tremolos. The spooky sounds are in no discernable pattern. Then some eerie sounding wind chimes as a backdrop to a repeating minor third interval progression on top of a pulsating dark cello bass line. A dark and gloomy Viola begins the first haunting theme in harmony with the cello bass line. This theme repeats with an equally sinister violin playing a dark and sweet countermelody. When the first theme ends, the violin plays a second theme which gives the listener the feeling of hope. This hope is then obliterated when the full orchestra brings the first theme back. This time it's much darker and stronger. The second theme returns again, this time, with woodwinds playing counterpoint. Brass instruments then repeat the first eleven notes of the first theme decreasing by octave. This is backed up by the strings playing Bortak Pizzicatos giving the feeling of despair and losing hope. We then hear a series of tertiary dark themes played by solo strings and woodwinds backed up by string trills. These tertiary themes are then repeated but are more developed with counterpoint shading them darker then before. This concludes as the first theme returns softly by solo Viola with piano playing a simple arpeggio underneath. This is repeated by the full orchestra like before, dark and dreary. The second theme returns, this time played by the full violin section. Finally, the piece ends with yet another string theme suggesting hope and despair at the same time.
