WHEN I WAS YOUNG AND DUMB

Story Behind The Song

As we grow older, we learn that many of the things that we had learned turned out not to be so truthful! And a lot of it was what our forefathers had thought! This is reminiscing about some of them.

Many ideas of my youth that I can remember, and many were hog-wash, hand-me-down secrets, or maybe there were in fact, just stories told to youngsters!!

When I was young and dumb, Oh, I had lots of fun.
But I thought dogs were boys and cats were girls.
I thought every oyster came with pearls.
My mother's name was Ma, and Daddy's name was Pa;
I didn't even know what town that I lived in.
Bitin' nails and cussin' was a sin.
Oh, I learned all these things when I was young.

When I was young and dumb, Oh, I had lots of fun.
At the end of every rainbow, lay a pot of gold;
At least that's the story I was told.
A rainbow made you rich, when you reached the end of it,
And storks delivered babies, and All dogs had rabies,
Warts came from a toad, and all girls learned to sew.
Oh I learned all these things when I was young.

Your elbow tested water, to see if it was hot.
Should we put the baby in, or, should we not?
Never eat a seed because a plant will grow inside,
and watermelon seeds you'd surely want to hide.

When I was young and dumb, Oh I had lots of fun,
Didn't know what Harvard was or Yale,
And every criminal went to jail.
All squash was poisonous, you didn't eat it any time,
But mushrooms, well, you cooked them with a dime.
All Onions gave you tears, and you were wet behind the ears,
Oh, I learned all these things when I was young.

When I was young and dumb, Oh I had lots of fun,
Now I'm wiser that I'm old, As I watched life's tales unfold,
I'm not stupid anymore, but I'm stubborn to the core.
Can't remember one day to the next, My poor brain is perplexed,
Blood pressure ain't so low, and I'm still waiting for Godot,
No, I'm not stupid any more -

Like I was when I was young and dumb,
Like I was....a long time ago....when I was Young and Dumb!
Like I was....a long time ago....when I was Young and Dumb!
........ when I was Young and Dumb!
