Story Behind The Song
Roy really was my first hero.
I started the song as a pure tribute to him, but realized as i worked on it that he was a symbol of our country's values way back then. It was written during the time that Clinton was evading questions
about the Monica Lewinsky affair.
Song Description
A nostalgic look back at Roy Rogers, and indirectly at the country and time he was such a part of.
An attempt by the writer to make us see ourselves as we were back then, and think about ourselves as we are today.

Lyrics
"My First hero"
My first hero was a singin' cowboy
On a golden Palomino on a silver screen
On prairies 'a crawlin' with cold blooded outlaws
He always fought fair and he always fought clean
He'd face every danger and never back down
Somehow he'd always pull through (Chorus)
And just as the sun set he'd ride out of town
And sing happy trails to you
He was a good guy and he wore a white hat
And the sweetest cowgirl rode by his side
He never once had eyes for another
He never swore and he never lied
(Repeat Chorus)
It was wrong against right
Every scene black and white
And like childhood over too fast
And I'm here tonight alone and longin'
For those Saturday shows
And that piece of my past
Those were the days of Cub Scouts and cold wars
Of pledging allegiance and prayin' in school
And he was the proof of what we were promised
You win in the end when you play by the rules
