With songs about bank robbers, relationships and one of the largest disasters in Colorado history, the Michael Lloyd Band is quickly gaining attention for its dynamic debut recording, the Highwaters EP.
Independently released in September 2005, the new all-original EP builds on the energy of artists like Ben Folds and Dave Matthews Band while evoking the classic styles of Steely Dan and Bruce Hornsby. It's an adventurous rock sound steeped in funk, R&B and soul-jazz influences.
Singer/songwriter/pianist Mike Liguori, 29, was born in Anchorage, Alaska, grew up in northern New Jersey and studied jazz at the University of Colorado. Liguori is joined by guitarist/bassist and co-producer Jim Ruberto on the Highwaters EP, along with talented guest contributors from as far away as Calgary and Venezuela.
Amelia Earhart's appearance on "45 At A Time" is among the cameos and interesting lyrical storylines. Amelia is a friend of the band, a relative to the famous aviatrix and a Denver radio traffic reporter. "Wildfire" was inspired by the personal tragedy behind the largest wildfire in Colorado history - the 2002 Hayman fire. "Sleepwalking" uses an energetic funk piano riff to set the stage for a bank robber whose motivation turns out to be something other than money.
At live performances, the Michael Lloyd Band stretches out to spark a big party atmosphere and explore its freewheeling roots in R&B and world music. Bassist Jonathan Barkin and drummer John Nelson supply the band's raucous grooves, propelled by a mix of vocal harmonies, funky keyboards and gritty electric and lap-steel guitars.
