Story Behind The Song
My wife Raven had almost a dream of this song - it just sort of materialized in her mind as she was falling asleep. I was working late in our studio and she came in and showed me the song. She does not play a musical instrument, yet was able to totally communicate the entire song to me by describing single lines of various songs and telling me how to augment them to be what she was hearing. She insisted on crediting me as co-writer, but I was only the instrument!
Song Description
We are not told if the woman's man has died or simply left her, but she deals with it during the day, but at night the pain is unbearable. She has vivid dreams of him and wakes up alone and in pain. Her plea is for somebody to hold back the night.

Lyrics
Hold Back the Night
©1998 Marvin & Raven Taylor/Five Feathers Music (BMI)
I feel the waves crashing over me
My heart is racing and I can hardly breathe
Your arms surround me and oh how real it seems
But suddenly I wake up and it?s only a lonely dream
Somebody hold back the night
'Til these dreams lose their hold on me
'Til I can let go of these memories
Won't somebody hold back the night
My hourglass emptied when you went away
The sands of time I can sift out by day
But when the shadows fall, My heart fills with dread
as the ghost of your memory haunts my empty bed
Somebody hold back the night
'Til these dreams lose their hold on me
'Til I can let go of these memories
Won't somebody hold back the night
Solo
Others only dream of the kind of love we knew
You taught me fairy tales should always come true
In the daylight I can still pretend
But then in the night I'm only a dreamer again
Somebody hold back the night
'Til these dreams lose their hold on me
'Til I can let go of these memories
Won't somebody hold back the night
Somebody hold back the night
'Til these dreams lose their hold on me
'Til I can let go of these memories
Won't somebody hold back the night
