C'mon Grandpa

Story Behind The Song

"C'mon Grandpa" is a true reflection of what happened when my wife and I became grandparents for the first time in our mid to late sixties. We love our 3 year old granddaughter to death, and she has become somewhat of a "grandpa's girl". Of course, she doesn't understand the vast difference in our energy and flexibility levels, but, like most grandparents, we do our best to live up to her expectations and, of course, spoil her. I feel that many grandparents, and probably a lot of parents, will be able to identify with the lyrics of this song.

Song Description

This song reflects what happens when a 70ish grandfather becomes the "best buddy" to his 3 year old, active granddaughter. Fun and games, but can grandpa survive it?

Lyrics

C'mon Grandpa

Verse 1
Well it's bright and early and she's dressed up all girly when her mom brings her in through the door.
But I'm in my jammies and still half asleep, and my tired feet have just hit the floor.
But she's a bright ray of sunshine that opens my eyes, and starts off my day with a grin.
So we'll suck down some brew, and do what grandparents do, spend the day spoiling her again.

Verse 2
Grandpa, let's do a puzzle, Grandma, read me a book, as she takes off her shoes and her socks.
Then she runs down the hallway where her toys are stored and drags out the bag with her blocks.
"Let's build a tower clear up to the sky", she says with a mischievous grin.
As it just starts to soar, it gets knocked to the floor, then we'll start it all over again.

Chorus
C'mon Grandpa, I want you to play, it's time to get down and pretend.
C'mon Grandpa, I can't wait all day. I need you, you're my bestest friend.
C'mon Grandpa, get down on the floor, and we'll do our numbers to ten.
But my knees sound like thunder, and I can't help but wonder just how I'll get back up again.

Verse 3
Well, she fiddles with lunch 'cause she just has a hunch that naptime is just 'round the bend.
But she finally goes down, and then Grandma and I can charge up our batteries again.
Then when she gets up there's a diaper to change, "Pay attention", I tell her, "you see,
'Cause maybe some day, dear, you'll return the favor and you'll do the same thing for me,"

Verse 4
I empty my pockets of all of my change for her to feed to her piggy back home.
But the day's bright and sunny, and she took all my money, what can we do without floating a loan?
So we both take her hand and we walk to the park. "There's a squirrel" she shouts out in glee.
Then we swing on the swings, and we slide down the slide as she brings out the child in me.

Repeat Chorus
C'mon Grandpa, I want you to play, it's time to get down and pretend.
C'mon Grandpa, I can't wait all day. I need you, you're my bestest friend.
C'mon Grandpa, get down on the floor, and we'll do our numbers to ten.
But my knees sound like thunder, and I can't help but wonder just how I'll get back up again.

Verse 5
Well, the day's finally ending and it's time to be sending her home to her mom and her dad.
Though we're just exhausted, both Grandma and I, we both feel a little bit sad.
Then her dad comes to get her from these doting old sitters and we tell how much fun it has been.
Then a high five and fist bump, a hug and a kiss, and we can't wait to do it again.

But my knees sound like thunder, and I can't help but wonder........
Just how I'll get back up again.

clever lyrics, good premise good visuals

The song is "cute" and it could work for a kiddy show perhaps. The vocals fit the format of the song and the harmony is clean. The lyrics very creative and I love that a story is told through the song. There is a nostalgic feel that comes with this arrangement.

I wish you could see the HUGE smile this song put on my face. I absolutely LOVED it! I'm a grandma and this so describes the babysitting experience accurately...from playing blocks to changing diapers and the exhaustion when the day is over. This song is also humorous (about returning the favor of changing diapers, what a riot!) You put your heart into it; I love an honest song that was written for the joy and truth of the experience, not wondering whether it'll be "commercial" or not. In my opinion, you knocked this one out of the little league park!
