Dazzling vocals and sparkling charisma: Alyssa Atherton is an emerging artist whose undeniable rock presence is a resounding introduction of what is yet to come. Her new CD, recorded with Elvis Michael Baskette; links a compelling voice, an impressive cast of young hungry musicians and a finely-crafted suite of songs to world class production. The effect is electrifying.
It's been a very fast track for the 19-year old from Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Alyssa has recorded songs have already been featured on television shows like The Hills, The Real World, Cribs and Dancing With the Stars. She began singing at 10, and by 15 was intent of making music her life. Blessed with the support of her family, she was introduced to vocal coach extraordinaire Brett Manning who has enhanced the vocal chops o f artists like Taylor Swift and Keith Urban. "Brett works with my favorite singer, Haley Williams from Paramore," says Alyssa. "He's so smart. Not only does he do vocals but he encourages me to sing differently."
Alyssa cut her first tracks when she was 16. Signed to an initial record deal (since dissolved), she learned hard, valuable lessons about the music industry and its inner workings. Among her early supporters were Fleetwood Mac producer Keith Olsen who flew to Sioux Falls to meet her and hit songwriter Paul Taylor.
With the ability to cut multiple finished vocals within a very tight window of time, Alyssa is a vocal producer's dream. "When I'm singing I get lost in the words" she avows, "and I sing them how I feel. The most important thing is to be believed." The building in Minneapolis where she recorded her debut tracks also houses an agency with ties to MTV. It was through this connection that her music reached mainstream television audiences. She recalls the first time she heard herself on network television: "I was sitting in my kitchen with my dad in the morning and a song came on that was so familiar to me. It was a song I liked. I thought, 'This is really good.' Then, all of a sudden I heard my voice - I was so excited!"
In addition to vocals, Alyssa has been co-writing her songs. A guitar girl at heart, melodies are incredibly important to young Alyssa. She keeps a journal that she describes as "really messy," to express her inner thoughts. She focuses intensely in her craft. "In Sioux Falls I always sang. There's not a lot else for me to do. It is everything I've been living and breathing since I was 15."
Alyssa sends this message of optimism that is reflected in the rapidity of what she has already achieved, and the certainty of where she intends to go. "Sometimes I felt alone, and I didn't know what to do. Without my family helping me to achieve this it would be even more difficult. It's hard to go from a small place to a big place, but it's possible. I've gotten this far, and I will never give up. If you work hard enough, eventually someone out there is going to believe in you as much as you believe in yourself."
