OPEN YOUR EYES

Story Behind The Song

In his final nod to the USA and because he had been reading about the building and closure of Shea Stadium, W thought up a story about a difficult day in the life of a baseball team. What does a coach do to inspire the team when it is facing certain defeat? - obviously, he tells a story full of allusion, metaphor, symbolism and inspiration - hence the song. There is also the issue that W wanted to write a song that could be performed in a stadium to good effect - we think he got it just about right. Great guitar work from Colin and Eddy, Chico played his drums like a man possessed, Harry pulled the whole thing together with his throbbing bass line and W stepped up to play the piano and organ parts. Well done also the girls who provided a fantastic gospel feel to the backing. A rousing, spirit lifting finale to this collection.

Lyrics

OPEN YOUR EYES ( W L COTTERELL 2013 )

Open your eyes, look at the light,
Feel the new day, set everything right
This is the place and this is the time
Put all else aside we've got a mountain to climb

I know it's hard, I know it's tough
And sometimes the journey will be so, so rough
Hold onto my hand, keep stride with me
Over that mountain is where we can be

Step by step
Line by line,
Together we've read the story so many times
Inch by inch,
Word by word,
Together we can do anything however absurd

Watch the rain fall, clouds up ahead
Life is for living, we take that as read.
Soon the storm breaks, soon the sun shines
Mile after mile we will travel but we will be fine

Nobody has ever said that it would easy .......
Nobody has ever said that it won't be hard .....
Everybody has a shot at the big time
Each and every one of us has the right to play our best card

So, open your eyes, see what is clear,
I'm standing with you, I'll always be here
I'm in your heart, you are in mine,
Hold on together 'till the end of time

It has a good vibe to it but needs work. Keep working at it.
