Story Behind The Song
This is the story of two police officers from New York who are going about their daily work - the key aim of which is to leave the city as it was before the crime took place - ie to clean up the crime, make the arrests and serve justice on the criminals. The feel of the piece comes from the time that W took his family to New York for a holiday and he wrote this song thinking of the drive from the airport in Newark all the way into the heart of the city and onto Lower Manhattan. Musically the piece is influence by the cop shows of the 1970's with lots of brass and percussion ( thanks to Les Trompettes du Chasse and Chico ). Before the final stanza, there is a form of round being sung and Eddy had to duplicate the lyrics at intervals of one bar .... which proved interesting.

Lyrics
THE SCENE OF THE CRIME ( W L COTTERELL 2013 )
The call comes in, the pulses race,
We're heading downtown, we're not wasting time
It's a smash and grab, wise guys with guns,
An everyday crime, an everyday crime
The squad car brakes, light after light
We're onto the case, we're ready and primed.
The sirens scream, the vests are on,
We're standing in line, we're standing in line.
We live, we fight, we keep you safe at night
We protect , we serve, we're trained to keep our nerve,
We try every day, to keep the bad guys away,
We work hard for each dime,
To make sure all that's left is the scene of the crime.
The play is called, up come the guns
My partner and me we're ready and primed.
A single shot is all it takes
To run out this time, to clean up this crime.
We live, we fight, we keep you safe at night
We protect , we serve, we're trained to keep our nerve,
We try every day, to keep the bad guys away,
We work hard for each dime,
To make sure all that's left is the scene of the crime.
And everywhere the perps have left their mark on the place,
You wonder how they could be in the human race,
If I could find a way to clear them off the streets
I'd try, I'd try.
It's the scene of the crime
The scene of the crime
