Story Behind The Song
I don't remember the exact story, but I'm thinkin' it had something to do with a (ahem) marital disagreement. Yeah, I musta been innocent. Or something like that (smile).
Song Description
We all need to have some "bend" in us. The chorus in this song didn?t come about till May, 2000. Part of my fence blew down in a big storm. In the replacement process, I discovered that the posts were not supposed to be set in concrete like mine were. Too inflexible ? they snap in a strong wind. Ah, life imitates art, or is it art imitates life. You can figure this one out as far as the fences/relationships metaphor goes.

Lyrics
Happens fairly frequently, it?s not intended
Gone and set another fire, fences to be mended
Fences to be mended
Today is finally history, tomorrow?s slate is clean
If I don?t watch myself, I?ll play the same old scene
I?ll play the same old scene
CHORUS
Fences, fences, fences to mend
They?ll fall right back down, if they can?t bend
I don?t always jump for joy, though sometimes I?m contented
If we try a little bit, the war could be prevented
The war could be prevented
Well maybe yes and maybe no, and maybe time will tell
When we go another round, I?ll be there for the bell
I?ll be there for the bell
repeat CHORUS
Now I don?t always jump for joy, though sometimes I?m contented
If we try a little bit, the war could be prevented
The war could be prevented
