I'm a Hoosier

Story Behind The Song

We moved to Indiana in 2020, right in the middle of the pandemic. For exercise, I'd ride my bike in the countryside, with soybeans on my left and corn on my right. This song was written from my bicycle seat. I love singing it at my shows. I bring along an owl puppet to help with the HOO HOO HOO!

Song Description

If you have the opportunity to drive through the state of Indiana, you're going to see a lot of soybeans and corn. It fuels the economy of this midwestern state and inspired the writing of this song. This tune heralds the simple pleasures of being a Hoosier from the crops to the kids in the park, the cloud-studded sky and friendly folks who inhabit the state. If you're looking for a song for kids to sing about Indiana, this would be a good one, because it also teaches how to spell Indiana. Note: Grownups love it too! That's my buddy Chris Henry on banjo and mandolin. Background vocals were provided by Daniel Kiteck, Alyssa Ralston, and the Stasson sisters, Mary Lou and Ellie. Great vocalists all!

Lyrics

CHORUS: I'm a Hoo Hoo Hoo Hoo Hoosier
And I'm swayin' with the corn.
I'm a Hoo Hoo Hoo Hoo Hoosier
And I wake up every morn
To the sunshine and the soybeans
And the friendly farmer's wave
I'm a Hoo Hoo Hoo Hoo Hoosier
It's a dandy Indiana day!
It's a dandy Indiana day!

Well the farmer's in the field
He's plowin' up the dirt
And the worm's playin' peekaboo
Till it's snatched up by a bird.
I-N-D-I-A-N-A it's where I plan to stay.
I-N-D-I-A-N-A, my home, my favorite place. SING CHORUS

Well the Kids playin' in the park
And they're jumpin' off the swing
Clouds scudding 'crost the sky
Well it makes me wanna sing
I-N-D-I-A-N-A it's where I plan to stay.
I-N-D-I-A-N-A, my home, my favorite place. SING CHORUS

Well the folks here are so friendly
They make you feel at home
I guess I'll stick around
Never more to roam
I-N-D-I-A-N-A it's where I plan to stay.
I-N-D-I-A-N-A, my home, my favorite place. SING CHORUS
