Story Behind The Song
I was in Phoenix to attend the wedding of a friend and was tossing and turning in the hotel bed, feeling lonely and sorry for myself. I literally thought "there is no rest for the weary - I want so bad to be near someone I know" so I wrote the line down and then more lines poured out. This was an era in which people actually wrote letters so I imagined writing a letter to someone in an effort to make amends and maybe get back together. Of course, I never actually wrote that letter and, guess what? Years later, I'm still writing songs about being a weary soul! This song was produced and recorded by Bill McKinney, a Detroit-area musician and producer who, with my longtime drummer, vocalist, and friend, Pat Schrein, filled in all the parts, including background vocals.

Lyrics
(GOT TO WRITE) THIS LETTER
There is no rest for the weary
My heart is racing so
I want so bad to be near someone I know
I hide my head under covers
Hoping that sleep will come
To rescue me from the lovers come and gone
They slipped right through my fingers
I let them get away
I didn't know I'd miss them so some day
That's why I've got to write this letter
I've got to make you see
There is no one better than you are for me
This is no time to be cautious
Peruse the how and why
It's time to live by the creed of do or die
I'm just so tired of reacting
Trying to shield the blows
Just when this cell became shelter, no one knows
I looked at every roadmap
There's no place else to be
But innocence when things made sense to me
That's why I've got to write this letter
Explaining things somehow
I've got to make things better than they are right now
I've got to write this letter
Before it gets too late
Try to make some sense out of this shattered state
I've looked at every roadmap
There's no place else to be
But innocence when things made sense to me
That's why I've got to write this letter
I've got to write this letter
Got to write this letter, got to write it now
I've got to write this letter
And try to make things better
Got to write this letter, got to write it now
I've got to write this letter
And get to you somehow
Got to write this letter, got to write it now
