Story Behind The Song
My daughter, Emily, has an awesome voice. Both her father and I have sung professionally but if the truth be told, she kicks my ass when it comes to singing! I wanted to write a song we could perform together. I gave her editorial control over the lyrics she would sing. I asked if she wanted me to send her a rough version so she could practice the melody before coming out to California to join me in the studio. "No, Mom," she said. "I'll just learn it when I get there." I picked her and her brother, Sean, up from the airport (coming from different locations), we grabbed a bite to eat, and went to the studio. She had never heard the song before and nailed it immediately. Sean, Bill Bentley, and I were awestruck. Later, Bill made a video with pictures I offered up and shots of me recording in the studio. Wish we could have had some video of Emily recording (she's a striking beauty) but we had to make do with pictures this time. She and I got to sing this song at her wedding reception.

Lyrics
Mother and Daughter
I brought you into this world
But you've always been your own girl
Loyal and kind, you always find
The courage to speak your own mind
It's a mother and daughter thing
No one can come between
This unbreakable bond that the two of us share
I am your history
You are my legacy
A medal of honor that we get to wear
Always there - it's a mother and daughter thing
Right from my first memory
You've always been there for me
Patient and strong
Caring and calm
You made it clear all along
It's a mother and daughter thing
No one can come between
This invisible bond that the two of us share
I am your legacy
You are my history
A medal of honor that we get to wear
Always there - it's a mother and daughter thing
As we go through each new phase
Turning page after page
We keep finding at every age
Some things never change
I watch you in awe from afar
So proud of the woman you are
As different as we
May seem to be
I carry your spirit in me
It's a mother and daughter thing
No one can come between
This beautiful bond that the two of us share
I am your history
I am your legacy
A medal of honor that we get to wear
And I swear, it's a mother and daughter thing
