Something So Final

Story Behind The Song

I became infatuated with someone and we had a brief "thing." The only problem was that I didn't realize it was going to be brief until he suddenly stopped calling and didn't return any of my calls. He never explained his about-face (even to this day) and I was left with unanswered questions about the why and the finality of his unilateral decision. I originally recorded this with Pat Schrein and Bill McKinney in Michigan. When Bill Bentley and I considered it for inclusion in my musical memoirs, we decided to re-record it (but I still listen to the original sometimes). I got my children, Emily and Sean, to join me on the background vocals.

Lyrics

Something So Final

Verse 1: There's something so final
In a phone that doesn't ring
In a mailbox that's waiting
Devoid of anything
It's hard to accept
It's hard to go on
There's something so final
When someone goes wrong

Verse 2: You offered me your heart
And I gave you back mine
It was love at first
We were blissfully blind
In a gesture so loving
So tender, so rare
You offered your heart
For me to treasure and share

Bridge: Then as fast as you gave it
You took it away
With no explanation
Well, what could you say?
I made a mistake
I guess I took a wrong turn
That's just one more fact of life
One more lesson I don't care to learn

It's hard to accept
You know it's hard to go on
There's something so final
When someone goes wrong

Verse 3: You cut through the layers
Of resistance I'd built
And made me feel more special
Than I had ever felt
You brought out the passion
And the naivete
When you take off the layers
There's a woman in me

Bridge 2: And now that you've found her
I want her to stay
Not wrapped up in tissue
And packed away
I'm trying to stem the sense of panic that I feel
At the thought of going back
To a life that's lost its appeal
