Story Behind The Song
I wrote a version of this song several years ago that sounded very country and upbeat. When I brought the song out of storage with the thought of including it in my musical memoirs, time and experience demanded changes which resulted in the song becoming a ballad with lots of revisions to the lyrics. At first, I resisted the change suggested by my very patient producer, Bill Bentley. But soon, as with most of his suggestions, I saw the light and embraced the ballad-ish approach. The song is very emotional for me and represents a coming-to-terms with certain decisions I made in my life that I probably wouldn't have made if I'd had the experience to recognize and appreciate the effect they would have in the long run. My favorite line is the first one: "It took a little time - it took a lot of wine - but you changed my mind about us."

Lyrics
V1: It took a little time - it took a lot of wine
But you changed my mind about us
Now you're a friend to me and not my enemy
It's a victory for trust
I can't remember why we ever said goodbye
Seems so silly now - we could've worked it out
So today I find, with the luxury of time
I have seen the error of my ways
V2: Thinking back to when our story first began
You were the only man I ever loved
I just didn't know how to let it show
Too busy being so damn tough
I never let you see how much you meant to me
That was my mistake - I just watched it break
Now today I find, with the luxury of time
I have seen the error of my ways
Bridge: We didn't know it then
But that was not the end
Who'd have ever thought we'd be friends?
Well the past is past
We're moving on at last
We have a chance to make amends
V3: I'd like to show you how I can love you now
Now I've seen the light - let me make it right
Maybe you will find, with the luxury of time
I have seen the error of my ways
