What You're Going Through

Story Behind The Song

I wrote a version of this song years ago when my daughter was experiencing a break-up. I brought it into the studio as part of my musical memoirs project and put it in the capable hands of my producer, Bill Bentley, who re-worked it into a jazzy song with a new tag line and other additions. In fact, he improved it so much he earned a co-writing credit (don't say anything but if that were the only criteria, he'd be listed as co-writer on the majority of my songs!). He got Tony Malfati to play saxophone, which is one of a very few times someone other than Bill or me plays on one of my/our songs.

Lyrics

What You're Going Through

Verse 1:
We promised to be faithful
Yours, ours and mine
We'd have a little family
All in good time
But our promises were broken
Even though we tried
Spirits so willing - losing out to pride

Chorus:
I know what you're going through because I've been there
I've made every mistake that you can make
Oh, you're a lot like me - I hate to see your heart break

Verse 2:
I was way too independent
According to our friends
Where their opinions matter
That's where my free will ends
I thought our love was special
Because we took the vow
Little did I know we could lose love somehow

Chorus

Bridge:
Don't let go of the part of you that makes me love you so
If you fly, remember those of us you're passing by

Verse 3:
It's no one else's business
What you do with what you know
Maybe you'll stay with it
Or say it's time to go
Whatever your decision
Whichever road you choose
Remember that I'm here for you with love you cannot lose

Chorus
Tag:
You'll get through this
You'll be so strong
Learn from me
And pass it along
