Who Put a Toothpick in my Waterbed?

Story Behind The Song

The story IS the song. Someone actually did put a toothpick in our waterbed and I decided to write a song about it. Life is never boring at our house, that's for sure!

Song Description

They say that truth be stranger than fiction. This is a true story. From the toothpick in the tush to the screaming bridge, this song appeals to the 4th and 5th grade mind, and the crazy side of us all.

Lyrics

The strangest things happen up in Callahan at night.
The armadillos prowl and the giant skeeters bite.
But a recent strange occurrence has filled my heart with dread.
Someone put a toothpick in my waterbed. Someone put a toothpick in my waterbed.

I thought we were protected and I felt that we were safe
When we crawled beneath the covers and our bedtime prayers did say.
We cozied and we cuddled, and then quite discomforted
(Tim yelled) Yow! Someone put a toothpick in our waterbed.

Who put a toothpick? Who put a toothpick?
Who put a toothpick in my waterbed?

The point was really sharp and it stuck him in the tush.
He yanked it out in fury and gave me a little push.
"Hon, I didn't do it! I hope you haven't bled!"
Oh, who put a toothpick in my waterbed?

Who put a toothpick? Did YOU put a toothpick?
Who put a toothpick in my waterbed?

I'm baffled and confused. I can't solve the mystery.
There's someone out to get us and I KNOW it wasn't me.
Someone wants to drown us as we sleep beneath the spread!
Who put a toothpick in my waterbed?

Who put a toothpick? Who put a toothpick?
Who put a toothpick in my waterbed?

Bridge:
What if the mattress had sprung a leak?
What if the water had soaked the sheets?
Crept up our nostrils so we couldn't breathe?
What if we died in our sleep? (blood-curdling scream, pause)

This world is full of problems that I cannot figure out.
There's wars and floods and famines; there's tornadoes and a drought.
If El Nino doesn't get me, I must know before I'm dead:
Who put a toothpick in my waterbed?

Who put a toothpick? Who put a toothpick?
Who put a toothpick in my waterbed?

What a fun and funny song.... toothpicks can really wreck havoc...glad you exposed these prickly little buggars.... perfect vocal and that voice, that voice.....is that you Taylor Swift?

love it, love, love it!!! well done I don't where you get your energy, but I want some..

Good melodys and a strong hook. Sounds like and excellent childrens song would be good for sing a longs.

very cute and down home tune, fun and for kids for sure...very unique

That spoken intro is just great. I love the drama of the song and the squeals and shouts. Fantastic vocal performance. The changes of pace and audience participation really bring the song alive. A catchy song. Entertaining lyrics. A superb recording. Very engaging.

That must be Kate!! Really fun song!! So clever and humorous!! Sounds like it went over very well with the crowd!

I can't remember if any female children's Show Hosts sang??? I'm not sure if Sherry Lewis & Lamb Shop sang on her show, but if she did, Kate would be perfect as a Children's Show Host.......Kate has a 60's Folk era feel in her songs and performances.........She should have had a T.V. show back in the days!! She would have been a huge Hit!! Not sure how responsive those cute little kids would be today, with their Video Games and phones???

Cute and energetic lyrics and music. Very reminiscent of the traditional folk story-telling tunes. I can see it spanning multiple ages, from children as they are participating and the adults that will appreciate and enjoy it. Nice job, clever.

Very funny song - great vocals as well. The guitar sounds great and has a wonderful rhythm - the children's voices is a very good idea and sounds great.

The lyrics are clear and tell the story very well. The vocal articulation and versatility are clear talents of the vocalist. The audience / chorus seems to really enjoy the song. The guitar is simple and appropriate. The stops and pauses are all to the benefit of the drama of the lyrics. The energy of the vocalist seems like it would engage children in a live show.

What a fun song! I could hear this on Broadway

Cleverly written, very well performed and recorded with grea production values. Nicely done!
